will the road past Hana be closed May 5th

I read on this forum that the road past Hana will close for 3 weeks for bridge repair. I%26#39;ve looked for info and verification of this and can%26#39;t find it. Could someone please verify this. My trip is during this time frame and I wanted to drive the road around. I went to Hana 3 years ago and the road was closed because of the earthquake. I was so happy when the road opened up again and I would be able to go around.

Thanks

Just took a look at the other posts about this closure. It looks like it closes on the 4th. Sorry!! I%26#39;m fairly positive the info in these posts are as good as a confirmation you can get. You can get on the national park web-site for more info I suppose.

Upcoming Bridge Replacement at Paihi to Trigger 21-Day Road Closure

Press Release

April 23, 2009

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Upcoming Bridge Replacement at Paihi to Trigger 21-Day Road Closure

WAILUKU, Maui, Hawaii-- The County of Maui Department of Public Works announced today that the ongoing construction of the new Paihi Bridge and the removal of the existing temporary bridge structure at Paihi will require a road closure expected to last 21 days beginning May 4, 2009. Other brief closures lasting up to 3-4 hours may be needed to ensure worker and motorist safety after the road reopens on Monday, May 25, 2009. The Paihi Bridge is located in Kipahulu in East Maui near mile marker 45.

The three-week closure will allow the disassembly and removal of the temporary structure; vehicular access is expected to be restricted for the duration of the closure. The contractor, Global Specialty Contractors, said it will provide a shuttle to transport area residents through the construction area in the mornings and evenings to accommodate students, employees and others needing to travel to Hana town during the day. For more information on the shuttle service, call Global Specialty Contractors Foreman Jeff Francis at (808) 741-8305 (cell).

Paihi Bridge was scheduled to be repaired prior to the October 2006 earthquake, when its footings were damaged by the quake. After it was determined that the earthquake damage could not be safely repaired, a temporary bridge was installed to accommodate road traffic until the design and engineering work for the permanent replacement was completed.

Signs have been posted to notify motorists of the long-term closure; other same-day road closures will be posted on the County’s website at www.mauicounty.gov in the “Road Closure Notifications” section and sent out through the website’s e-notification email service. To subscribe, select the notification tab on the home page, and click on “sign up.”

Thanks you guys. Wouldn%26#39;t you know it, when I could go again the road would close again. Well maybe I need to plan another trip.LOL Anyhow I could drive around the other way to see the back side, huh

Thanks again

We%26#39;re staying a few nights in Hana next week...does this mean we won%26#39;t be able to get to the ;Ohe%26#39;o Gulch? It looks like on the map that would be after this point (sorry I%26#39;ve never been to the area..just making sure I%26#39;m reading this right!)

';does this mean we won%26#39;t be able to get to the ;Ohe%26#39;o Gulch? It looks like on the map that would be after this point';

That%26#39;s what it means.

The bridge being replaced is between Hana %26amp; Ohe%26#39;o Gulch.

that is disappointing.we have 4 nights at hotel hana maui as hilight of our stay in maui .we were going to do the pipawai trail hike(i told my wife it was the only true hike she had to do in hawaii.she is a reluctant hiker at best)and would have liked to go at least a little further around the coast..any thoughts how we should spend the half day planned for the national park?.should we backtrack along the hana road for a longer look at something?.if the best answer is relax i won,t be offended.just wondered?.regards ian

If you still wanted to see the park, you could access it via the Pi`ilani Highway. I doubt they%26#39;ll be closing the park during this period, but they might reduce personnel and/or close the VC during that time. But the trails, etc would all still be accessible.

Of course, if any portion of the Pi`ilani Highway is closed though, then unfortunately there%26#39;s no way to access the park.

Waianapanapa is right before Hana. Was that on your plans? The Hana Lava Tube aka Caverns are also very neat. http://www.mauicave.com/

we stay at ka%26#39;anapali for our first 4 days and may find the pi%26#39;ilani drive return a bit long for our young daughter?.i realize the hana drive is as long but don,t want to push our luck.we did plan to stop at waianapanapa state park but may now do part of the coast walk.i guess i figured the pipiwai trail would cover us for jungle and a waterfall.may have to consider a look at something on the big island when we overnight at hilo.thanks ian

If I had to pick between `Ohe`o via Pi`ilani Highway or seeing the Hana Highway, I%26#39;d hands down pick the Hana Highway. Waikamoi Ridge Trail is a good jungle hike and there are several waterfalls along the way (one can be seen from the Garden of Eden, which is a great stop with amazing views). Upper Waikani Falls (3-bears) is another beautiful falls further down the highway.
