Sheraton or Castle Kiahuna....

Hubby is being sent to Kauai for work. We are between two hotels right now....Sheraton Kauai or Castle Kiahuna. We are not taking the kids and we are busy bodies. Seems like the Sheraton has more going on and is a little more ';happening..yet reviews are iffy. Castle Kiahuna seems pretty low key with out much located on the resort, yet seems to get good reviews. My husband will be working a few days so I will be car less and at the resort by myself. Can you give me advice on where I should stay?

Also is there any other hotels you would recommend in the area that would be in the same price range?

You need to ask yourself if you want a condo or a hotel - The Kiahuna Plantations is condos and the Sheraton is a hotel - they are both next to each other - I would pick the Kiahuna in a heart beat!

Sheraton or Castle Kiahuna....

Interesting... Kiahuna is a condo complex (Small units) though alot of people seem to like it.Sheraton is a ordinary hotel, set near an Ocean. Kiahuna does not have A/C if that is a deal breaker for you.

I suspect when you say ';We are busy bodies'; that you mean you lead active lifestyles, not nosey and intrusive as the phase is usually meant. Either way there is lots to do and see in the Poipu area. The complexes are next to each other on a lovely stretch of beach Shopping center within walking distance to some small shops and restaurants. Kiahuna pool is not handy.

The Sheraton frequently disappoints with their Garden rooms and extra charges. Neither place is on our radar, depending on your budget. Poipu Kapili is lovely and just down the road. Some units have Air/C. If you research a litlle more I%26#39;m sure you will find something suitable. The price spread between room/condo types can vary by over $200/night. Garden (Parking Lot) to full Oceanfront view....so budget comes into play

Are you not staying with your Husband?Does his work not provide/offer accommodation?

Maybe I should say I think I am more of a resort type person oppose to a low key condo. I want entertainment and restaurants accessable. I may be by myself where ever we stay for a few days so I would enjoy some ';on location'; entertainment to keep me busy. Even if we do get a condo I would not be wanting to cook often. If we stayed at the Sheraton we would not do the garden wing. Yet if we stay at Castle it seems like it may be a bit boring for my attention. Kinda think the Sheraton would be better, yet the reviews scare me!

We are deciding between these two because they are already approved places to stay through his work. Yet they will consider other hotels if they are in a similar price range per night.

Where is his work located? That might help you out with a location. If his work is closer to Lihue, you may want to consider the Marriott in Lihue or the Hilton on the east side.

Sheraton is a hotel, room with a bathroom and lanai. Kiahuna are condos, full kitchen, seperate bedroom, etc. The Sheraton is right on the same beach as Kiahuna but since the Sheraton is a hotel, it has on site restaurant, gym (a small one), bar, sundries shop, computers in the lobby, a nice clothing store, valet parking. Kiahuna are condos but since it is right next door, you have access to the same restaurants, but not the gym or pool area at the Sheraton.

If you really want to be at a resort in Po`ipu you probably want the Hyatt. The beach is not swimmable, but it is very close to Po`ipu Beach Park. The suggestion for the Marriott in Lihu`e is a good one, too.

Be warned: There is little ';happening'; on Kaua`i. We pretty much close up shop by 9pm, although there are more options near the Marriott than most other resorts.

The Sheraton and Kiahuna are right beside each other - so what one has is readily available to the other. We stay at Kiahuna and often go over to the Sheraton, just for a walk, a coffee, a drink on the terrace....The best restaurant is actually located at Kiahuna - Plantation Gardens. If you stay at the Sheraton, the walk through Kiahuna to the shops at the Poipu Shopping Centre will probably end up being one of your favorite things to do.

Kiahuna is gorgeous. The grounds are tropical and lush, with massive trees and big open lawns. It has a unique feel you won%26#39;t find anywhere else. The condos are all the same layout. Not huge, but very airy and a real pleasure. Kiahuna is a feast for the eyes.

The days withou a car would be the same in either place. At Kiahuna, there is a concierge desk (go over to the Outrigger office) and they are very helpful. You can even take in a morning breakfast presentation on the island and activities, even if you are registered thru Castle. Just ask. It is a very good way to find your feet on the island and the neighborhood. it would be great if you could snaffle your DH%26#39;s car part of the time.

I think it would be much more restrictive to have only a hotel room to go to rather than your own living room, dining and kitchen. The kitchen doesn%26#39;t mean you don%26#39;t eat out - it just means you get to choose! Coffee and toast on the lanai or lunch or a good bbq meal in the evening out there are such a treat! Every unit has a lanai with table and chairs and chaise lounge.

Kiahuna%26#39;s pool is across the street. It is a lovely place. We enjoyed it very much. But most mornings we would greet the dawn with a coffee walk to the beach, spend part of the day down there and be back on the beach for a sensational Kiahuna sunset every evening. This is a world class beach.

A walk on the beach will also take you to the Marriot (just around the point) and on to Poipu Beach Park. You can also walk (although it would be a fair stretch) over through Poipu Kai to the Grand Hyatt and shipwreck beach and Maha%26#39;ulepu coast line...gorgeous. You won%26#39;t be without something to do or see unless you want to. Which isn%26#39;t a bad thing either!

This is a beautiful part of Poipu. You will enjoy either choice, I am sure.

Aloha from Kaua%26#39;i!

Sheraton Kaua%26#39;i or Kiahuna Plantation? Really apples and oranges - one a nice, mid-level hotel on a great beach with a restaurant, lounge and about 3 stores on property in addition to a Hawaiian crafts program that has crafters coming to the resort every day. Ocean view rooms are fabulous from there - 2 pools, both on the small side.

Kiahuna Plantation is a wonderful condo complex just a few steps away from the Sheraton - it has lovely grounds with big, mature trees and pathways that meander thru and down to the ocean (some condos are oceanfront). There is a swimming pool, but it is across the street - however Po%26#39;ipu Beach is right there and is usually swimmable (always check ocean conditions).

Across the street from Kiahuna Plantation is Po%26#39;ipu Shopping Village with many shops and restaurants - there is also a free Tahitian dance show on Thursdays. Keoki%26#39;s Paradise and Roy%26#39;s are 2 of the popular restaurants that are there.

As far as ';happening'; - well Kaua%26#39;i isn%26#39;t really a ';happening'; kind of place as in well, Waikiki or Lahaina or Ka%26#39;anapali Beach. More low key for certain.

I%26#39;d say either one would work for you - both are lovely properties and both have amenities that should occupy you if you are ';car-less'; - which certainly will limit you unfortunately. At least you%26#39;ll have the beach, pool and shopping village closeby - and you can also walk aways down to Po%26#39;ipu Beach Park and Brennecke%26#39;s Beach - not far from either property.

Bear in mind - these two properties are directly next to each other.

Malama Pono,

Janet

Agree completely with mezzsop.

They%26#39;re right next to each other. Share the same beach too. Whatever the Sheraton has for shops/restaurants, and all that, you can just walk 5 minutes over there and check out.

My opinion - when your husband is away at work would you want to be stuck in a hotel room environment or would you like to have a place that is more relaxing like home? Think - sofa, living room, kitchen for drinks, all that. Sitting on a bed in a hotel room can get kind of boring. This is just my opinion of what I would want.

If you do pick Kiahuna, make sure it%26#39;s not a unit that is far back from the beach. Those units back up to Poipu Road , which isn%26#39;t all that bad. It%26#39;s just that they%26#39;re further from the action, where it sounds like you want to be.

I just got a Priceline bid for the Sheraton at 120 per night. If his employer is not paying use Priceline. Always works for me.

That will be a garden room wont it?
