Anini Beach/Poipu/Kalapaki

Thinking of Kauai in August- with aone year old baby.

How are these beaches different from each other?

And which has the whitest sand?

Also which is good to go in with a one year old ?

Would be staying at the MArriot resort-Lihue.

Thanks!!

Anini Beach/Poipu/Kalapaki

Hawaii doesn%26#39;t have white sand its more golden.

Poipu is a fine beach but as with any beach check with lifeguards about the current conditions.

Anini Beach/Poipu/Kalapaki

Aloha from Kaua%26#39;i!

The beaches here on island that are considered most

';keiki-friendly'; are the keiki pool at Lydgate Park in the Lihu%26#39;e area - the ';keiki pool'; at Po%26#39;ipu Beach Park - and the shallow tidal areas to the far west side of Salt Pond Park in Hanapepe. All of these parks have full facilities and lifeguards as well.

Kalapaki Beach can be ';iffy'; - to the extreme east side of Kalapaki Beach you might find some shallow tidal pools, but in general the beach does get some waves - some days it is gentle and fine, some rough and tumble.

Anini Beach - again, full facilities at this park and there are shallow areas for the keiki.

Malama Pono,

Janet

If you want to be close to a keiki friendly wading pool, POIPU has such a protected pool on the far left side of Poipu Beach.

There are protecting rocks, lifeguards, facilities, and pavilions with picnic tables, to escape the august sunshine. Brenneckes has a restaurant upstairs and a deli downstairs directly across the street. Lots of parking at brenneckes as well as closer to the Waiohai.

Marriot , Lihue.

The beach at the Marriot is one lovely beach, with coco palms, grass, and a wonderful large swimming pool. Perfect for you both to play in the water.

There is a small break for surfing and boogie boarding and body surfing in the center.

The far ends of Kalapaki Beach , and this is IMPORTANT, read higher levels of polution, than in the center. You might want to take that into consideration.

How do we know ? From personally talking to the person who oversees the polution sample testing by volunteers, that is forwarded to the authorities.

We met him at a nawiliwili harbor clean up, as we had volunteered to clean up the harbor area, near Kalapaki Beach.

Lydagte:

Now, you also can drive up to Lydagate Park, in a little less time than to Poipu.

LYDAGATE has a rock protected lagoon for wee ones, to keep you safe from the East shore swells. it is located on the far north end of Lydagate State Park.

There are lifeguards to check with in this area, and they have facilities, restrooms and showeres, and a few covered pavillions.

The beach actually stetches for quite a long distance all along the park and beyond. Perfect for a walk. Short or long.

They also have a paved path that weaves along the beach, and great for pram rides. About 1/4 mile long.

---------------------------------------------------

Anini:

A very lovely and beautiful beach area. Perfect for wadding with the wee one, especially in august, but keep close into shore as they can have some strong currents up there.

No life guard, but facilities with restrooms, showers, and I believe diaper changing areas ( ?).

Anini will be a longer drive from the Marriot by quite a bit, and you may also get involved with the Kapa%26#39;a traffic. However, if you check out the UKG, you will see mile markers and the Lihue By Pass.

Both of these things are extremely helpful in navigating around Kauai.

Plan and study your directions, land marks, mile markers, etc. You do not want to be reading a map when driving with the young one in the car.

Now, I know, a lot of info is coming at you, but I have an idea, that you might think of.

You can do all of the above, rather easily, and have new places to explore, and pick the one that feels better for the both of you.

And, if you do not feel like driving, you have the very, very nice swimming pool area at the Marriot to enjoy with your youngster.

And you have the beach to stroll, as well as a walkway that runs along Kalapaki beach for strolling or pram circuits.

You will also have nice lounge chairs, nice sandy beach, surfers to watch, and plenty of facilities, and the ABC store is an easy pram ride for incidentals. or you can walk and carry the child.

Yep, you have four different places, all suited to your request. Pick one, or any of the three for variety. Mix and match, if you wish.

Welcome to Kauai

Denny

Aloha from Kaua%26#39;i!

';No life guard, but facilities with restrooms, showers, and I believe diaper changing stations';

Denny, I could be wrong, but I think that Anini now has a lifeguard station - I seem to remember it being one of the last things our late Mayor Brian Baptiste did before he passed away.

I hope they have one, it is needed!

Malama Pono,

Janet

Hi Janet,

I was at Anini several times this past week and there was no life guards or a life guard stand in the area. One thing that did scare the heck out of all of us tourists was when the siren went off! We all looked at each other not know if it was a test or if we should run for the hills!

At the far end of the road there were two life belts hanging from different trees with the story posted about leaving them there for rescues and that the one time they were gone someone drowned!

Pam

Aloha from Kaua%26#39;i!

My bad - I was sure that Anini Beach had gotten one, but apparently not!

And yes, those monthly test sirens can shake you until you realize what day of the month it is!

Now I%26#39;m wondering which beach it is that got the lifeguard I%26#39;m thinking of???

Malama Pono,

Janet

No lifeguards at Anini.

That siren was the monthly test - first Monday, 11:45. It always startles me, and I have to remind myself that it%26#39;s a test.

My mistake- we are at the other Marriot- at Waiohai- poipu beach sounds good ....where is the nearest grocery for basic items like milk?

And good reasonable place for breakfast? or even better a buffet breakfast?

:)

thanks!!

Aloha from Kaua%26#39;i!

';we are at the other Marriot- at Waiohai- poipu beach sounds good ....where is the nearest grocery for basic items like milk?

The closest grocery store would be Kukui%26#39;ula Market -just across from the fire station on Po%26#39;ipu Road (going towards Old Koloa Town) - they have a good selection of grocery items and a lot of organic and locally grown items as well.

Other than that - Old Koloa Town has Sueoka Store (wonderful family owned store with everything one could need!) and Big Save.

Reasonable place for breakfast? Un - I don%26#39;t know what you%26#39;d consider reasonable, but Joe%26#39;s on the Green is very popular and not expensive - right behind Po%26#39;ipu Shopping Village. If you really want to eat ';local'; - Kukui%26#39;ula Market has breakfast bentos (boxes) with eggs, rice and some type of breakfast meat all boxed up and ready to go - take them to the beach or back to the Waiohai - ono!

The only breakfast buffets I know in this area are at the Sheraton Kaua%26#39;i (Shells) and the Grand Hyatt -Ilima Terrace and it is pretty pricey. I%26#39;d recommend the breakfast buffet at Shells (around $18 I believe) - wonderful ocean views and great food!

Malama Pono,

Janet

Ke%26#39;e Beach way at the end of the road on the North Shore should be perfect for a baby in August. Water is reef protected and very sandy and tends to be very very very calm in the summer. Gentle entry. Shady areas around the edges. A BEAUTIFUL setting, so you will enjoy it also. It would make a nice day. Drive up there while your lovely little one is napping in the carseat. Spend the day at the beach. There are generally chickens running around where you park your car, which your little one will like. You can always rinse off in the showers at the park across from the Dry Cave (you%26#39;ll understand when you get there). Have dinner in Hanalei.
