trips

does anyone know who the best company is to book trips with?

trips

I would ask local friends and family. See a travel agent. He/She should be able to book you with Classic Hawaiian Vacations or ... darn! I%26#39;m blanking! Will get back to you.

FYI - take extra caution booking on line through the zillions of on-line agencies. Given the economy (and some questionable business practices) bankruptcies are common. Going through a reputable travel agent may be the best approach.

Oh, and United Airlines has a good package.

When you get to the point of choosing a hotel, do some research on this site and ask us questions.

trips

Sorry i actually meant trips while in Hawaii, im already all booked up to go.

Where are you staying? Personally, I would work through the hotel concierge ... like for The Arizona/Pearl Harbor Memorial. The exeception would be the Polynesian Cultural Center - take a look at the packages on-line. Some include pick up/drop off at your hotel. It%26#39;s a great service.

And you don%26#39;t need a booking agency for the Bishop Museum (walk-in); Iolani Palace (book directly on-line and take The Bus there).

What do you want to do? Like to do?

ScotlandVavavoom .... here is what you do.

Upon your arrival and while waiting for your luggage at baggage claim area, look around in the baggage claim area for a tourist rack stand and go find yourself ';101 Things To Do'; magazine and what ever else looks interesting re: rack cards, This Week and/or Oahu Guide magazine. This is your beginning.

When you are ready, go down to see your hotel concierge for help in suggestions and recommendation as to what tours are available and what they would recommend for you.

Because everyone has different ideas as to what to do, the ';101 Things To Do'; magazine will help you with what ever tours you might be interested in.

There is alot to do and see, good luck and enjoy your vacation. ';Live Aloha';!

Is ';101 Things To Do'; on-line. It seems like there is a current post ... Dusty?

D you have a good travel guidebook and map?

Hi ScotlandVavavoom, I%26#39;m just across the Irish Sea from you. I am making my tenth trip to Oahu this year. If you drop me a message telling me what you would like to do or see, I%26#39;ll see what I can help you with.

John.

Irish Bars in Waikiki

Can anyone recommend a great Irish Bar in Waikiki?

Just a bit of entertainment and a Guinness to finish of a day in Paradise!!

Many thanks.

Irish Bars in Waikiki

I have heard of a place called Murphy%26#39;s Bar and Grill but it%26#39;s not in Waikiki it is in the financial district. I looked it up and the address is 2 Merchant st couple blocks from Aloha Tower you could probably take the bus.

Irish Bars in Waikiki

There are three on this list that are in Waikiki. Moose McGillicuddy%26#39;s, Kelly O%26#39;Neil%26#39;s, Irish rose Saloon. I%26#39;ve been to Moose%26#39;s, but not the other two. Moose%26#39;s is OK, decent entertainment, but not that much Irish.

…metromix.com/facets/bars-and-clubs/topic.ba…

Irish Rose is popular with locals, it is near the convention center.

The Irish Rose Saloon, formerly at the Outrigger Reef Tower Hotel, is now located on Ena Road next to the 7-11 store at the corner of Kalakaua and Ena Road.

Things not to miss for a trip of a lifetime

This is our first trip and we don%26#39;t want to miss a thing.....what are the highlights, must sees, must dos, must eats, must shops.

Would appreciate any advice. We are vegetarian and are going to be in Waikiki.

Things not to miss for a trip of a lifetime

How old are those traveling?? That kinda gives us an idea of what you might want to do. I myself just returned and my girlfriend and I boogie boarded all week. It was by far our favorite thing to do. Go snorkeling, that%26#39;s fun too. One piece of advice, don%26#39;t jam a lot of stuff into your trip. How many day%26#39;s are you there? We had the best time just hanging around the ocean and pool with a nice cocktail

Steve. Also when are you going?

Things not to miss for a trip of a lifetime

Look in some of the previous posts

for the Dusty list. Dusty has

everything listed and all you have

to do is print it out. Also, check

out the Oahu Revealed Book.

You can get it and Barnes and

Noble.

we are a young couple on our first trip to Hawaii - both in our early 30s.

We did like Steve says made a list of what we thought we wanted to see and do than numbered them. Three trips later there are still things from the list to be done, darn guess we have to go back again. The most important thing is to enjoy whatever you choose to do and take you time doing it.

If Waikiki is the ';trip of a lifetime,'; then you might experience braincell overload from a trip to the Big Island because it is just AWESOME!

...but, if you are limited to Oahu (and should find yourself in Kailua) then try visiting ';Down to Earth'; on Hamakua Dr.

They%26#39;ve got GREAT tasting veggie food and a berry smoothy with enough antioxidant to make you void every toxin that you%26#39;ve encountered since kindergarten.

...and it%26#39;s tasty, too!

List of things to do on Oahu

These are some hints/suggestions for things to do and see on Oahu. Many of the websites listed are good for all islands.

Arizona Memorial: (free) get there early, preferably by 8am. Opens at 7:30am. If you get there after 10am the lines can get long and you may spend 1-2 hours in line. Battleship USS Missouri and Submarine USS Bowfin are in the same area. These are about $15 each so you can go or skip them. Look for coupons in brochures for two for one. You can take pictures of them from Arizona Visitors Center and the Arizona tour ferry. Go on the lawn behind the Visitor%26#39;s Center (Circle of Remembrance) for great pictures. You can also walk around the Bowfin Memorial area for free without taking the tour. Its worth the time. The Swap Meet is only a couple blocks from here at Aloha Stadium.

Polynesian Cultural Center (PCC): www.polynesia.com General Admission about $50 or the luau buffet package ($80). They also have an optional buffet (no entertainment) for $15. The evening %26#39;Horizons%26#39; show is the best Polynesian show in all of Hawaii. It comes with all ticket price options. The higher priced ticket packages get the better seating for %26#39;Horizons%26#39;. Also the earlier you get there, the better the seating is for %26#39;Horizons%26#39;. The Ali%26#39;i Luau Show that is part of the luau package is also a good Polynesian show. IMAX, Canoe Pageant, Samoa and Tonga villages and Canoe ride are the best other attractions (these are included with any type ticket). Plan on this as an all day event. Get there by 1pm (earlier if possible), leave around 9:30pm. When I take visitors, I try to keep on this schedule: IMAX 1:30, Canoe Pageant 2:30, Samoa 3:00, Tonga 4:00, Canoe Ride around 4:30, regular buffet or Ali%26#39;i luau buffet 5pm and %26#39;Horizons%26#39; at 7:30. The other villages are nice also, but there is not enough time for all of them. You will have time to do some shopping or looking around between the buffet or luau and %26#39;Horizons%26#39;. Closed on Sundays. You can go back for free for two days. Check with PCC employees for instructions before leaving the Center if you want the extra days.

Coupon in Entertainment Book to save $36.

Diamond Head Summit: Drive right into the crater and hike to the top. ($5 per carload or $1 each if you walk into the crater). I prefer to drive in. Awesome 360 degree view from the summit. Best time is around 8am or around 4pm. In between it can get hot walking to the top. Takes about 1 - 1 1/2 hours roundtrip.

Punchbowl (National Cemetery of the Pacific): (free) While you are there, drive to the overlook area. Short walk to the summit that overlooks the entire city. If you have time, take the Mt. Tantalus/Round Top drive through a rain forest. Stop at the Puu Ualakaa State Wayside about 2/3 of the way to the top of the mountain. It has an awesome view of the city from Waikiki to Pearl Harbor. Punchbowl is near the bottom of Mt. Tantalus.

Hanauma Bay: Snorkel. Its for any age. You can rent snorkeling equipment there or some places in Waikiki or bring your own. Closed on Tuesdays. Try to get there as early as possible. If you drive, the parking lot gets filled up by 9:00 or 10:00. ($1 for parking, $5 for each person). You can reserve snorkel tours with several companies. They provide equipment, transportation, etc. They seem to have better equipment than the park does. You can also take the city bus. But the first city bus doesn%26#39;t leave Waikiki until 8:30 am. Website:

…honolulu.hi.us/parks/…welcome.htm

Byodo-In-Temple (Valley of the Temples): $2 each. Just past Kaneohe. Haiku Gardens in Kaneohe is close by.

Chinaman%26#39;s Hat: (free) Kualoa Regional Park is just past Byodo-In-Temple. Nice for pictures, picnic, swimming. Also nearby is Macadamia Nut Farm Outlet just before Kualoa Regional Park. Kualoa Ranch is across the street.

Swap Meet: You can buy almost any souvenirs here much cheaper than anywhere else. All items are new. Vendors wrap around the stadium twice. Located at Aloha Stadium near Arizona Memorial. Open Wed, Sat, Sun.

Hilo Hattie%26#39;s: Nice place to shop. Higher prices than swap meet, but not too much more on many items. Has good selection of clothing, candies and souvenirs. Check brochures for coupons. Can take free Hilo Hattie%26#39;s shuttle from Waikiki.

Ala Moana Beach Park: (free) Nice beach. Great sunset location in the winter. Walk all the way out to the end of Magic Island. Great view of Waikiki, Diamond Head, Ala Wai Boat Harbor (shown in opening scene of Gilligan%26#39;s Island).

Hike to Manoa Falls: $5 for parking at Treetops. One mile one way. Short hike through a rain forest. Also small bamboo forest there. Treetops restaurant there (at the previous Paradise Park site) has a good Chinese buffet. Lyon Arboretum is nearby. It is a nice botanical garden. You can park there and walk a short distance to Manoa Falls trail.

Hike to Makapuu Point Lighthouse: (free) Great view from here. Easy one mile hike. In winter months (mid-November to mid-April) it%26#39;s great for whale watching.

North Shore Beaches: Haleiwa, Banzai Pipeline (Ehukai Beach), Waimea Beach, Sunset Beach, Shark%26#39;s Cove (Pupukea) and Laniakea Beach. Laniakea Beach has sea turtles. Other nice stops for pictures in the area. Can be huge waves in winter. Good snorkeling at Shark%26#39;s Cove in the summer. Laniakea Beach is located about 1/2 way between Waimea Bay and Haleiwa.

Other beaches: There are close to 100 beaches on Oahu. Besides North Shore and Waikiki beaches these are some of the better ones: Makaha Beach (west shore), Waimanalo Beach, Waimanalo Bay Recreation Area, Lanikai Beach, Sandy Beach, Hanauma Bay and Kailua Beach (east/Windward side), Ala Moana Beach Park (south shore). All public beaches are free except Haunama Bay.

Dole Pineapple Plantation: On H-2 just past Wahiawa. Can visit on the way to or back from the North Shore. Nice gift shop to browse, but expensive. Go behind the center for pineapple exhibits, gardens and carp feeding pond.

Kualoa Ranch: Several movies have been set here: (Jurassic Park, Mighty Joe Young and others), ATV rides, horseback riding, tours. Located across from Kualoa Regional Park. Several tours available.

Waikiki: Beaches, shopping, dining, nightclubs, shows, some museums. Wide range in dining prices. $3-4 breakfasts, $6-10 lunch buffets, $20-$25 fine dining and anywhere in between. Best Waikiki shows: Creation: A Polynesian Journey, John Hirokawa%26#39;s Magic of Polynesia, Society of Seven, Blue Hawaii (Elvis impersonator), many more to chose from. Many Waikiki shows offer cocktail show along with the dinner show. They seat you after everyone else has eaten. Regular price of shows around $40-$60. Cocktail show about $25-$35. There are several other short free hula shows and other demonstrations in Waikiki daily. Check the brochures for location, days and times. Check brochures and Entertainment Book for coupons for shows/dining/shopping, etc.

Downtown Area: Aloha Tower (take elevator to the top, nice view), Chinatown, Hawaii Maritime Center, Iolani Palace, Bishop Museum, other museums.

Botanical Gardens: Oahu has many botanical gardens. Most are free, the others charge a few bucks. Haiku Garden in Kaneohe is nice and is a nice stop if you are taking an island driving tour. Located near Byodo-In-Temple (Valley of the Temples).

Here is a nice site for gardens in the state:

http://www.hawaii.edu/sciref/botgarden.html (all islands)

Check brochures or get info on-line for others. Search: oahu botanical gardens

Other: Sea Life Park, Honolulu Zoo, Waikiki Aquarium, Children%26#39;s Discovery Center, dinner cruises, whale watching cruise, submarine tours, parasailing, helicopter tours, horseback riding, Hawaiian Waters Adventure Park, scuba, surfing lessons, other luau shows (Germaine%26#39;s, Paradise Cove, Royal Hawaiian). Many other attractions, things to do. Check the brochures.

Brochures: (free) Can be found in the airport baggage claim area or at hundreds of news stands throughout Waikiki, in hotels, in stores, and at some attractions. These are excellent ';things to do and see'; guide books (maps, attractions, beaches, dining, night clubs, etc.). There are a lot of coupons in these for dining, shopping, etc. The best brochures are: %26#39;This Week on Oahu%26#39;, %26#39;Oahu Gold%26#39;, %26#39;101 Things Oahu%26#39;, %26#39;The BEST of Oahu%26#39;. Automobiles: Oahu is the only island that you can get around by bus. Oahu has a good bus system, but a rental vehicle gets around a lot better. Parking in Waikiki can be a problem at times. If you plan on renting a car, make sure your hotel allows parking at the hotel or in a nearby lot or garage. Get the parking pass at the hotel registration area. Probably $10-$15/day to park at the hotel. You can get city bus passes at any ABC store in Waikiki for $20 for 4 days ($40/month). Or you can pay $2.00 per trip. There are also many shuttles, tour buses and vans and trolleys that go to many places (some are free). Also 1 or 4 day Waikiki Trolley passes available.

Here are two driving tours on Oahu.

You can combine the two if you want, but it is better to split them especially if you make frequent stops and want some beach/dining/shopping time.

1. Mini-circle island tour.

Start in Waikiki:

Diamond Head Lookout and Lighthouse on Diamond Head Road.

Continue on Diamond Head Road. When Diamond Head Road turns to go around Diamond Head, go straight on Kahala Ave. This will go through a residential area with nice houses. (Note): You can also take Diamond Head around to the entrance to Diamond Head. Even if you cannot do the hike, you can go through the tunnel into the crater to see what it looks like. Turn around just before the pay booth. Also Kapiolani Community College (KCC) has a nice cactus display. KCC is almost straight across from the entrance to Diamond Head.

After about 2 miles on Kahala Ave, turn left onto Keala%26#39;olu Ave (just before Kahala Hotel and Resort, formerly Kahala Mandarin Hotel).

Take Keala%26#39;olu Ave to Kalaniana%26#39;ole Hwy (72).

Continue around island to Hanauma Bay (don%26#39;t need to go to the visitors center). You can get some excellent views and pictures from the steps and lookouts that go up and to the left of the visitors center. $1 for parking.

Continue to Halona Blowhole and Halona Cove (From Here to Eternity Beach) next to it. Halona Blowhole lookout also overlooks Sandy Beach.

Sandy Beach - Nice beach.

Makapuu Lighthouse Trail - Just past Sandy Beach and just after the road turns inland, look for a gate and a paved trail on the right. Trail is about 1 mile one way. You can often see whales from near the lighthouse.

Continue to Makapuu Pt. Lookout. Overlooks Manana (Rabbit) Island and Makapuu Beach and Sea Life Park.

Continue to Waimanalo Bay Recreation Area (just past Waimanalo Beach). Scenic isolated beach (just before Bellows AFB). Bellows Beach is also nice. Open to the public on weekends.

Continue to Highway 61 (Pali Highway). Make a left onto Pali Highway. Take it back to Honolulu, stopping at Pali Lookout.

Note: If you were to make a right onto Pali Hwy (63), you could go to Kailua and Lanikai Beaches. You can stop there with either tour.

2. Circle island tour.

Start in Waikiki:

Take McCully or Kapahulu to H-1 West

Take Pali Highway (61) across to Kaneohe. Stop at Pali Lookout.

Continue to Kaneohe. Make a left onto Highway (83) to Kaneohe (or go straight if you want to go to Kailua and Lanikai Beaches).

At the far side of Windward Mall in Kaneohe, make a left onto Haiku Road. Take Haiku Rd. across Kahekili Highway to Haiku Gardens. The botanical garden is just below Haleiwa Joe%26#39;s Restaurant. Nice small Botanical garden with a Koi pond. It%26#39;s free.

Go back to Kahekili Hwy. Turn left. Go about two miles. Turn left into Valley of the Temples (Byodo-In Temple). Very Scenic.

Back to Kahekili Hwy. Continue around the island. In a mile or so Kahekili Hwy will end and intersect with Kamehameha Hwy (83). Continue around the island to Haleiwa.

Stops on Kamehameha Hwy:

Kualoa Regional Park/Chinaman%26#39;s Hat (nice for pictures). There is a Macadamia Nut Farm Outlet on the right just before Kualoa Park. Nice stop for free samples, coffee trees, macadamia trees. They have an inexpensive tour if you want. Kualoa Ranch is across from Kualoa Park.

In Laie, make a right at the stoplight. Go to Laie Pt. Scenic, good for pictures. Polynesian Cultural Center is in Laie. Also Mormon Temple is in Laie.

Just past Laie, is Makaekahana State Recreation Area. Scenic with an isolated beach and several islands.

Kahuku - Several shrimp trucks including Giovanni%26#39;s. Romy%26#39;s is just on the other side of Kahuku. Those are the two most popular shrimp trucks.

North Shore Beaches:

Sunset Beach Park

Ehukai Beach Park (Banzai Pipeline)

Pupukea Beach Park (Shark%26#39;s Cove) Scenic with lots of small lava islands. Nice for snorkeling in the summer. If you make a left on Pupukea Road (at the stoplight), go up the hill and park off to the side where the road to the Heiau starts. Walk back on Pupukea Road about 1/2 block for great view of some of the beaches. Then drive to the end of the road to the Heiau about 1 mile) and park in the Heiau parking area. Take the short (about 1 block) red dirt trail straight ahead for a nice view of Waimea Bay.

Waimea Bay Beach Park - Best scenic beach on the north shore.

Laniakea Beach - About 1/2 way between Waimea Bay and Haleiwa. Look for parking on the opposite side of the road. Several sea turtles are here. This is also called Lani%26#39;s Beach or Turtle Beach.

Just before Haleiwa, make a left onto the bypass to Honolulu. (Go through Haleiwa if you have more time). Take Highway 99 to Honolulu. Follow signs to Honolulu. You will pass Dole Pineapple Center. Stop there if you have time.

Continue to Honolulu.

Will you be able to get out of Waikiki? I only ask because Waikiki is similar to Miami or any other tropical major city.... not the ';Hawaii'; I pictured in my dreams. Try to move around a little bit, maybe head over to Maui...

We will be spending only 3 days in Waikiki/Oahu, otherwise we will be in Maui for 4 days and Kona for 2 days.

On Maui, THE must do is ride a bike down Haleakala. There are many bike companies to choose from -- Google to compare. You start by getting picked up at an insane hour at your hotel -- 2:30am or so, go to the bike place where you get outfitted, then begin the drive up the mountain. You reach the summit pre-dawn and watch the sun rise above the couds. It is very cold and windy, but a spectacular sight. The first groups to reach the summit are the first to begin riding -- which is why you start out so early.

The ride is not strenuous -- mostly you ride the hand brake. You pause for breakfast half way down. The terrain levels out somewhat after that and your smell pineapples and lavender as you continue the ride down to sea level.

One of the most fun things I%26#39;ve EVER done.

Help with flights to Big Island/Maui

Hi,

I am trying to plan a trip to both Maui and the Big Island. Does anyone here have a preference for which one to do first? I%26#39;m trying to find the cheapest way to get there but do not want to have to go to Oahu and connect - are there direct flights from the West Coast to either one of the airports on the Big Island? If anyone has done both on one trip and has advice, I%26#39;d appreciate it!

Help with flights to Big Island/Maui

Yes, several have direct flights from SFO or LAX to both Kona %26amp; Maui. I would pick which ever gives you the best schedule and price for your needs. Don%26#39;t forget to add in the inter island airfare between the two.

on a budget

Luckily for us accomodation is feasible. The flight from Toronto is however very costly. Can we do Kuai on a budget, or should we re-consider our options? Traveling May 25th thru June 4th or ? Many Thanks

on a budget

what is budget for you?

on a budget

Kauai can be done very inexpensively but a dollar amount would be helpful. I would recommend looking at condos on the north or south shore since you can cook a lot of your own meals. I%26#39;m personally not a big fan of the east side but it%26#39;s centrally located and I%26#39;ve seen folks get great deals.

You can accommodate almost any budget here, especially if you%26#39;ve already got lodging. You can easily do a basic breakfast at home - maybe go out for breakfast once during the trip. (Gotta try banana pancakes with coconut syrup.) There are plenty of economical places for dinner, and you can take homemade sandwiches for lunches. Our first trip here we invested the $14 or so for a good-sized collapsible cooler and took our lunches wherever we went. (We took the cooler home as a souvenir and brought it back for use in subsequent visits.

There are plenty of things to do here for free, and maybe you%26#39;ll want to splurge on a paid activity or two. You don%26#39;t need a boat tour to snorkel, but a trip up the Na Pali coast is nice, and not terribly expensive.

For budget last minute accommodations check out Craigslist and VRBO.

I agree with pzp that going the condo route will save you money.

Another way to go if you aren%26#39;t picky about where you stay is to do a Priceline name your own price.

Kauai is very budget friendly and you can find something for everyone. From cheap motels to 10 million dollar homes.

The East side and North Shore will find you the most options in the budget area. Poipu does have some good deals like at Waikoma Stream Villas.

You will also want to factor in the cost of a rental car. A visit to Kauai is far better when you have your own car.

Yeah you definately need a rental car--and we spent about 70$ in gas. We had breakfast each day at the condo--we actually brought a couple of boxes of cereal from home to start. Making and taking sandwiches on excursions definately helps. We found nearly all food items to be at least 30% higher than here in the bay area. You have to think airfare and your room is your major expense, VRBO is good.We ended up getting a deal on our room through Poipu Vacation Rentals. Don%26#39;t be afraid to negotiate--there is a good amount of vacancies there. Our air and car was a bargain through Pleasant Holidays.

I think Kauai offers the best deal for budget travelers out of the Hawaiian islands. I have stayed in nice condo%26#39;s for as low as $66 a night (based on a week rental) and car rentals are very reasonable. Cooking in and shopping at the markets can really save you $$ as well. :)

Marriott's Lahaina and Napili Villas

We have a March 21 reservation for the Marriott Maui Ocean Club Lahaina and Napili Villas. We are using points. We have a one bedroom villa Ocean front - Does anyone have any information about this location. We%26#39;re using Marriott points. Where/How do we check in when we get there? What are the rooms like? What are the pools like? Is there any other information that would help us out. The Marriott website gives us little information.

Thanks!

Marriott's Lahaina and Napili Villas

Wow lucky you! I love this resort although I have not stayed in one of the new towers. We will be there the first week of April staying in the older converted building in an ocean view 1 bedroom. Having a full kitchen is not that big of a deal to me however I would love to have a washer %26amp; dryer. The location of the resort is excellent. There is a paved walkway that goes along kaanapali beach past all of the resorts and Whalers Village which has several shops and restaurants. The pool at the Marriott is fantastic. The main pool is huge with a water slide and a waterfall with a cave grotto. Each new tower also has their own pool which will be much quieter as all the kids want to be at the main pool. The beach is not the best right in front of the Marriott however just south of the resort the beach gets much wider. The beach comes and goes along this stretch of beach due to the tidal currents in the various seasons. The restaurants on site are OK but I have not eaten at main restaurant since it changed its name to Longboards. When it was Va Bene we really enjoyed it. The other restaurant is not really a sit down restaurant. It has a small menu that serves B-L %26amp;D. You order at the window and they call your number out when your order is ready. It is ocean front with all outside ocean side tables. I have eaten breakfast there several times. My husband likes the breakfast burritos and my son and I like the pancakes. It also has a lot of to go items like pastries, salads, sandwiches etc. There is also a pool bar that makes good but expensive drinks but they do have a daily drink special and they make a good burger!. You will have a better ocean front view in the Lahaina building as it is closer to the beach and has a lovely grassy lawn in front and the Napili building is set further back and has a pool directly in front of it so there might be noise from people at the pool.

Our family really enjoys this resort and we have never been disappointed. The staff has always been very friendly and I can hardly wait until we get there.

I have to agree with everything the previous poster said. We own at the Maui Marriott, the original towers. We toured the Lahaina Tower and the units are beautiful, you will love it. The Napila tower just opened, so either one would be great.

The location is in Kaanapali on the beachwalk that leads to Whaler%26#39;s Village. It has nice restaurants and is a great place to go in the evening.

jdmckay:

I will let you know after our trip! We are leaving February 1st and also got the 1 bedroom oceanfront using our Marriott points. It was the deciding factor for us heading to Maui (that and the great airfare from Pittsburgh). I have talked to the hotel and know that the new tower opens Jan 30th. I hope we actually get into the Napili tower.

If you want to see photos of the inside of the new rooms, go to webshots.com and type in Maui Ocean Club. Someone actually took pictures of the inside of the new rooms (probably from the model). The one bedroom is a lock-off of the 2 bedroom unit. It will have the full kitchen, living room area with a fold out sofa. Washer/dryer. There is a jetted tub in the master bedroom, and the bathroom has the sink/tub/shower.

There is a lanai the has access from the living room and master bedroom. The lanai has a table and 4 chairs. A little small... and I wish it has a lounger but free is free so who am I to complain!

In addition to the large pool with slides, both new towers have their own pool. I was told by the hotel that they provide a ';1st nighter kit'; with coffee etc... then the rest you would want to purchase.

As far as check in... you should just be able to go to the reception area to check in. You should have an electronic certificate on file, and the front desk should be able to pull it up with no problem (keep fingers crossed.... check your online reservation and make sure it shows that the certificate has been ordered). They should require you to put a credit card down for incidentals, and the only other costs you should have is for parking, and anything else you charge to your room.

You can also find a really cool video @ vacationclub.com, Marriott%26#39;s site trying to sell their timeshares. If you choose the Maui Ocean Club (not the Lahaina Villas) they show a video for the property which has shots of the new rooms....

I%26#39;ll post my pictures once we get back mid February!

Thanks for all the information. We can%26#39;t wait. Yes, it%26#39;s hard to beat the price! 125.000 points! Now that they took out the black out dates, it%26#39;s going to take a lot more points to do something like this. We stayed at the Maui Marriott years ago, so I take it that they%26#39;ve transformed these into condos? As long as there is a reception area on site, I should be good to go with the check in. We really like the area, so it should be awesome! I definitely would like to hear about your impressions when you get back...especially if you get the new tower room. Thanks again for all your help!

jdmckay

Lvtolvlife--I would also appreciate if you post how your trip goes and what tower you are put in. I think it was you that posted about the availability of the Maui Marriott using points. I have never seen that before and I jumped on the chance to add a few days to our trip. I got 4 nights ocean front 1 bedroom in June using points. (So, thank you!)

I won%26#39;t mind either tower, both are so new and nice. I would like to see what the new pool is like by the Napili Tower. I thought ocean front could only be Napili, but now I think it could also be the 1 bedroom in the Lahaina tower.

Have fun and post a trip report! :)

We too are using points to stay at the Marriott villas in early March. We generally use points to stay at the Marriott in Wailea but the appeal of a kitchen drew us to try this. It%26#39;s been impossible in the past to find a villa on Kauai for points!

I think it%26#39;s going to be great to be at Kaanapali where there%26#39;s more to do close by.

I assume there will be pool towels you can check out but other than that I expect to bring everything I need (cooking items such as spices, salt, pepper...binoculars, beach toys). We are spoiled by staying in private condos that supply those items!

It is amazing...even the vacation club on Kauai had condos available for points. Can you imagine having to decide which place to stay for free! We decided on Maui especially because this condo is oceanfront. I have also packed most of the things noted, but have decided to not pack the beach toys or snorkel gear (gonna rent that).

We brought all that stuff when we went to Oahu in July and hated dragging it around... plus we didn%26#39;t pay luggage fees then like we will this trip! They might have it available there at the condo so we are going to wait and see then buy it @ Walmart if they don%26#39;t. We stayed last spring at the Marriott Marco Island and they actually provided those things for the kids to play with....

We just got back from our stay in the new towers. We were lucky to be one of the first to stay in the new Napili tower. We had an ';oceanfront'; 1 bedroom booked with points. The unit they assigned us was brand new, on the 4th floor. When we walked in we were blown away at how nice these units were. We had just spent one night at the Westin Villas in a one bedroom, and the living area was half the size of the Marriott units.

I did have a problem with the location of the room, and had to request a change of room (which they did not want to honor at first). Even though the whole Napili tower is considered either oceanfront or mountain view, the rooms on the ';curve'; of the building should be considered ';oceanview';. We had the end unit and when we walked out on the balcony we were facing directly into the side of their other building. You had to turn sideways to see the ocean. They kept saying at first that they had no other rooms, but since the whole building was ';empty'; they finally moved around some assignments and put us in a 3rd floor unit facing the ocean.

If I were to ';purchase'; an oceanfront room here, and got the rooms on the curve, I would be upset. If you are sitting on your balcony facing forward, an oceanfront room would not have you facing your neighbors directly.

They have a great pool right below the Napili tower. That being said, if I were to pick the best location, the Lahaina tower would be a better choice. We had a lot of noise coming up from the pool into our room. I noticed the Lahaina tower does not have this.

Parking is an issue without a doubt. There is a small parking garage in front of the Napili tower. Soon to be all valet, but when we were there we had limited spaces. It is a 15 minute walk from their parking garage to the Napili towers. The parking garage is attached to the Lahaina tower.

The rooms were wonderful, as were the pools. Loved having a full stove, and we used the grills downstairs once. The kitchen was well stocked.. the only thing they didn%26#39;t have is large bowls. They had tiny small bowls, which would have been hard to use for cereal or something else. I will post a full review later with photos.. Feel free to ask any questions.

Thanks for the review! We saw the Napila Villa being built last summer and I know what you mean about the room on the curve. I%26#39;m going to request a room not on the curve!

Parking was an issue as soon as the Lahaina villas opened up. Many times it is full! The front desk said they didn%26#39;t estimate enough parking places. Many of the 2-3 bedroom villas has several families that need 3-4 parking places!

I%26#39;m glad you liked the new villas. We toured the Lahaina Villas last year and thought they were beautiful.

The only issue I have about us going in June is that the super pool is supposed to be closed for repairs. We%26#39;re not too happy about that. I know it needs to be done, but how about doing it in the winter? :)

I agree about the problem with the superpool. Even though we were there during a ';low'; time, the superpool always seemed ';crowded';. The other pools are nice, but not very big. The one%26#39;s over at Napili Villas are long and narrow. Not a bunch of chairs. Hopefully they will still have a lot of the chairs available but I agree they should have planned to have the pool done June 1st at the least.

Late arrival to get better airfare

Hello and thank you to all who answer questions, post travel reports, etc.

My husband, kids (7%26amp;4) and I are headed to Maui in July for 14 nights. We%26#39;re staying at the WKORV-North. We have not yet booked airfare, although I%26#39;ve been watching it for some time. We%26#39;ve had better luck with waiting in the past, and I haven%26#39;t seen anything great so far. Non-stops are $860 (from San Francisco), and I am finding one stops in the $440-$550 range. However, these get in late, like 8-9:30pm, and our arrival and departure dates are on a Sat., which is not helping prices.

We are now considering flying to Maui on Friday afternoon - husband can then work most of Friday - and arriving Friday night and just staying at the Maui Beach Hotel in Kahului for the night (~$125). Then we can hit the grocery and Costco in the morning before heading to Kaanapali.

As far as I can see, pros are lower airfare (doesn%26#39;t need to be much lower when savings are multiplied by 4), shorter travel experience for the kids (grocery and Costco are not tacked on to the flights and drive to Kaanapali), and we get a nice early start at the WORKV on Sat.

Cons are that we%26#39;ll not really be starting out the vacation and our first night in exactly the paradise we have in mind (on the lanai at WORKV with an adult beverage in hand), but hey, we%26#39;d still be in Maui!

I%26#39;ve read a few reviews of this hotel and clearly it%26#39;s not where we%26#39;d want to spend our vacation, but it sounds like it might be just fine for what we need - one night to crash before heading on to the real vacation!

We%26#39;re also thinking of tacking on 2 nights at the end of the trip and staying at the Westin Resort using points - the kids love the pool there, and it allows us to fly on Mon. rather than weekend, which is cheaper.

What do you think? Alternative suggestions are welcomed.

    Julie

Late arrival to get better airfare

If you are wiling to fly out of San Jose the rates are 363 each way - - (HNL stops) SFO is coming up at 401 out but 351 back in via HA. It really does make a difference what day of the week, but the above flight prices seem to have many time frame options.

As for WKORV - have heard excellent reports from folks who have stayed there. Many repeats.

I always think adding time on Maui is a good idea! If you waited an extra day and left on a Sunday it would knock off about 70pp. (I just plugged in mid-July for example and of course the 4th is going to be more)

Late arrival to get better airfare

Fly in late, skip Costco and shop at Safeway of Foodland, or just hit Costco on the following day.

OK - so I went back and now I see your concern about the Maui Beach Hotel and NOT the WKORV - - so right about the one night to crash

(obviously it%26#39;s time for me to take a break ).

Thanks. We love WKORV - it will be our 3rd stay. It%26#39;s perfect for our family, esp. since we love to be able to snorkel right there off the beach.

Our dates at the hotel are 7/18 - 8/1, so we%26#39;re looking at airfares on those dates or 7/17 and 8/3. I%26#39;m pleased with the $440 round trip even with a stop. Yes, we%26#39;d consider SJC or OAK as well, but I%26#39;m not seeing an option better than the $440ish, esp. adding the qualification that we NOT get in late if we get in on Sat. 7/18. The prices you mention are each way, right?

    Julie

Julie, if I found RT for 440 I would pounce on it. Paid 425 for 4 three years ago so all things considerd it%26#39;s not a bad price at all. (we ended up with several hour layovers which I won%26#39;t do again - two hours tops for me)

Budgets are such tricky things! x4 adds up quickly, so I certainly understand.

I would just go to your hotel the night you arrive - even if it is late. The next morning you have to check out and get to your new hotel - what if they don%26#39;t have an early check in? Whatever the hassle the night before - you will wish you were waking up the next morning already on vacation and not still in transit.

2 weeks with kids...I understand you%26#39;re desire for that Costco stop! I%26#39;d crash in Kahului on Friday and ';shop'; your way to WKRO. I really would advise a couple of nights at the Westin if you can use points, we%26#39;ve done this several times and it saves a bunch on airfare. If you could make it 3 nights the cheapest, at least on Hawaiin, is usually tues.

Good luck...I%26#39;ll be there in spirit, we own there as well.

If you stay overnight in Kahului then you will probably wake up early because of the time change. Perfect time to go the Saturday Swap Meet for your veggies. It is 2 blocks away from the hotel and opens at 6. Then you can get to Costco which I thinks opens at 10:00 or 11:00 for the meat and cereal etc.

Thank you for your replies! Les, we are getting close to pulling the trigger. The flights do have layovers of 2-3 hours, but if the trip is broken up by the night in Kahului it won%26#39;t be as big of a deal. On the way home it works because it gives us a chance to get a decent dinner for the kids in HNL before the longer flight to SFO. It really is a decent price and since I%26#39;m not willing to give up an early Sat. arrival, these flights are looking like a good call.

Mamma, WORKV is great for families, no? We love the activities for the kids and for us, too. We once participated in the session where the bartender taught us all to make a tropical drink, and the kids sat at a ';legal'; table right near us and watched the cook staff through the window while they brought the kids snacks and smoothies and pineapple and entertained them. The Costco trip is definitely a must for us, even if it was only for a week. We buy meat to grill plus cereal, wine, sunscreen, fruit, bread, snacks...works great for us but the kids don%26#39;t like to go so tacking it on after the flight is always a bit of a chore. We%26#39;ll just bring a cooler bag for the meat for before we can check in.

It will definitely be a bummer not to be ';there'; the night that we get there, but with the $$ savings I think we have to go for it. We haven%26#39;t been able to get our room early at WKORV, but we always have swimsuits accessible and just head to the pool and beach. This way we can probably also rent our snorkel gear before getting to the villas also.

Excellent tip on the farmer%26#39;s market, Jim! Those little nuggets of info are exactly why posting here is so great. I love farmer%26#39;s markets and so do the kids. They love when we give them $5 each and let them buy whatever produce they choose, and they often have it eaten before we get home. My 7yo is a foodie and loves trying new foods, so he might find something unique.

    Can%26#39;t wait to get there!

I%26#39;m glad it%26#39;s coming together for you! Sounds like a very good plan to me.

    Anyone buy the A3H card?

i was looking into this and with the savings on Blue Hawaii tours it will pay for its self and i can get 50% off tickets on snorkeling and many other things!

anyone use it? do you think its worth the $30 it costs?

    Thanks

    http://www.hawaiifun.org/GoldCard.shtml

    Anyone buy the A3H card?

    bump

    Anyone buy the A3H card?

seriously nobody bought the a3h card? you can get half price tickets wtih trilogy!

i bought it for the Trilogy discount and it was worth it for that -- never used it for anything else. BUt it%26#39;s legit if that%26#39;s the question.

but as far as i know it%26#39;s only 10% off for trilogy.

there are 50% off tickets for select places and trilogy is one of them. there are only a few each month and the start selling them the first day of the month (today) and sell out quickly.

    Sunset at Beachhouse

I know it can be a mad house at sunset but ya just have to do it if its your first time to Kauai.

My question is - I have booked a table for 6pm, what time will sunset be early July? I can change the reservation time if need be. Thanks for your help.

    Sunset at Beachhouse

    Sparkle,

Make your reservation for when they first open. And then arrive a few minutes early and have them seat you as soon as possible. You can request a front table at that time and you will be able to take your time and enjoy the sunset. Bring sun glasses! We forgot once and the waiter lent us a couple of pair. I agree, it%26#39;s fun if you have never done it before. We saw our very first green flash in December 1999 from the Beach House.

    Hours:

    serving dinner ~

    5:30 p.m. - 10:00 p.m. ~ September 15 to March 31

    6:00 p.m - 10:00 p.m. ~ April 1 to Sepember 14

So 6:00 p.m. is a perfect time for reservations. Show up about 10 minutes early to guarantee a front table.

Thanks for your replies, cant wait! 8 weeks to go!

    I agree -- it%26#39;s an evening we%26#39;ll always remember.

Sunset will be around 7:15 ish in July...

Beach House?? We all make Choices...

Beach House is no longer my favorite place to dine. We have not been since 2006 when we had back to back bad service and OK food. But folks that have been there recently have posted good reviews. I prefer to sit on Baby%26#39;s Beach in Poipu with a glass of wine to watch the sunset.

BTW, the sunset will be over the land in July, not over the water. We love watching the sunset in Princeville in July.

We make reservations each summer, and they tell us when to come for sunset seating. Even thought 5:30 PM sounds very early to begin dinner, we accept that time because we want a front row table. There are always dozens of others who want those tables too, so the first group in gets them. Then they seat you back further in the restaurant as people arrive.

The sunset is lovely, even though it may be over land. The ocean is right in front of you and the orange and pink sky sprawls out forever in the water. It is truly beautiful.

    photopassport.com/photos/poipu_beach_sunset_…

Yes, people walk out on the grass, but everyone has a respect for the beauty unfolding in front of them. I love to offer to take photos of newlyweds or people celebrating a special occasion, so that they will both be in the photo using their cameras.

As far as a madhouse, the first seating has enjoyed their cocktails, salads and dinners and are usually on dessert and coffee by the time the sunset arrives, so your meal is not interrupted. At least that is our experience. Enjoy your experience.

As far as dinner, service, servers, and an all round wonderful dining experience we have had great sunset evenings at the beach house for over 15 years.

Early is good , as had been mentioned. We have time to visit with friends who work there, and one time the manager came over and sat down with us to talk story.

Even tho as residents we no longer get up and go outside to have our photos take, or swap cameras with others for their photos, it still feels good to our hearts to see others doing so.

I think we remember how we felt those many years ago, and to this day, enjoy seeing the glow and smiles and enjoyment of the visitors, out on the lawn, tiki torches, sunset and sharing.

Cannot stress how important going early is, and of course booking it early, even from the mainland before you head over.

At times it can be, or at one time was, nearly a two week wait for early reservations. we would book for the last night of our two week stays, and even now , living here, we call two weeks ahead.

Do we have other favorite places to have special dinners out, you betcha, lots of em, but the beach house has always been very special and still is, with not one unhappy experience , ever.

We also hope everyone will enjoy it as much as we have.

Our hearts, and tummys feel great there.

    Much aloha

    Trip Report - 4/22-27

OK the photos are finally up so I can post our trip report. :-) We did quite a bit of driving... Next time will probably focus more on a few favorite spots!

    4/22 - Flew RDM-LAX-LIH, arriving around 8pm.

Got our rental from Budget via ';Hawaii Drive-O'; (www.wailuabay.com). We did a lot of price comparisons on rental cars - used Entertainment, Costco, rack, airline discounts. This agency was one of the few that could get us a Jeep *and* the price was about the same as an Economy car. I was a little worried that the confirmation did not specify car type but the agent reassured me and said to call if we were unsatisfied. SO... I was relieved when everything went smoothly and we rolled out in a 2dr soft-side. :-) As soon as we pulled out of the rental lot those sides came off but we left the top on.

DH rolled right past Foodland in Kapa%26#39;a and didn%26#39;t want to turn around so we went to Safeway to stock up. They are *expensive* ... stick with Foodland (even without Makai card) as they have better prices and deli. Continued on to our vacation house in Moloa%26#39;a Bay and crashed (it was about midnight ';our'; time by then, we were pooped!).

4/23 - We woke up early! DH and I had pretty much agreed to stick to Pacific time so we got up with the chickens (literally). It had rained all night long so the air was a little cool. Went for a morning walk on Moloa%26#39;a Beach.

Since it was raining off and on we decided to get the lay of the land. We headed out to the North Shore first. Stopped at the Kilauea Lighthouse, watched surfers in Hanalei Bay for a while, and still got to Ke%26#39;e Beach before the crowd... and even the lifeguards. :-) Did some swimming and watched the big waves crash against the Na Pali coast line till it started raining and headed out. Made someone very happy when they got to pull into our parking spot. Took our time heading back to Moloa%26#39;a Bay.

Ate lunch (sandwiches and fruit from Moloa%26#39;a Sunrise Fruit Stand) on the lanai back at the house. Watched some geckos fight to the death in the foliage. Decided to head out and hope the weather improved. Got shave ice from the Halo Halo stand in Kapa%26#39;a... they were out of ice cream so it was just OK. Walked around Kapa%26#39;a and looked in the shops and around the ';fair';.

Continued down the road, did the loop through the tree tunnel and came up through Koloa then to Lawai so we could look at the shell leis. Went to Kipu Falls during a break from the rain. The water was really muddy so we didn%26#39;t swim. The falls were beautiful and the sun was out, so we just relaxed there for a while and soaked it all in. Stopped at the quilt shop in Lihue and browsed.

Dinner was back in Kilauea at the pizza place in the mall. Then back to Moloa%26#39;a to chill out for the evening.

4/24 - Drove back out to Ke%26#39;e and hiked to Hanakapiai Falls (8 miles roundtrip). The first two miles out to Hanakapiai Beach aren%26#39;t too bad, mostly good trail. Until you have to cross the river! The two miles up to the falls were really muddy and it%26#39;s a very strenuous hike. Think river crossings and lots of rocks to climb up and down. Next time I%26#39;ll wear water shoes!

After the hike, went for a quick dip at Ke%26#39;e. Grabbed burgers from Duane%26#39;s and beer from Whalers to enjoy back at the house and crashed.

4/25 - Both of us wanted a big breakfast after the long hike. We went to Eggbert%26#39;s. I had banana pancakes that were pretty good. DH had eggs benedict and it was just OK. Good service and good coffee!

We had grabbed a paper to read at breakfast and saw that Polihale SP was reopening that day. We had planned to drive out to Waimea Canyon already so decided to go to Polihale first. (Originally thought we might do more hiking at Waimea but we were both really sore!)

Stopped at Hanapepe first to walk the swinging bridge and stretch our legs. Nothing else was open so we didn%26#39;t get to look in the galleries.

LOVED Polihale. It%26#39;s paradise. Long beaches, warm sand, blue ocean... I felt like I was in heaven. Walked and waded a bit on Polihale Beach, watched the surfers, then decided to try to find Queens Pond. Stayed there for a couple hours, swimming and sunning, till it got hot and we started to get hungry.

Ate lunch from Da Booze Shop in Waimea. Good ribs and cold beer. Got shave ice from Jo Jo%26#39;s (yum! they had ice cream!) and headed up the Canyon. Stopped at all the view points. Only drawback to going to Polihale first was that by the time we got to the top it was totally socked in with clouds. Got a couple of brief looks at Kalalau Beach when the clouds blew off but mostly we just saw white.

Headed back to Moloa%26#39;a, got some good shoyu poke and a salad from Foodland for dinner on the way. Went for a walk on Moloa%26#39;a Beach and found the geocache hidden there. Left a travelbug from the Oregon Coast in it.

4/26 - Our flight wasn%26#39;t scheduled to depart until 9:15pm so we had most of the day to enjoy!

Started out at Queens Bath. It was too rough to swim, with the waves washing over both the mouth of the pool AND the rocks on the ocean side. At low tide. Still it was a beautiful morning so we enjoyed the views and the sounds of the ocean for a while. Left when the crowd started to wander in (!!!).

Went to Tunnels Beach. This was probably the MOST crowded beach we visited during our stay. But... still lots of room for everyone, not like beaches in Mexico or Waikiki we have visited in the past. There were a lot of snorkelers (we didn%26#39;t bother with gear) and some surfers riding off the outer reef. Swimming through the snorkelers was a bit challenging at times as they are so busy trying to spot something they don%26#39;t pay attention to others so they run into everything including swimmers, other snorkelers, the beach... wow! Otherwise we really liked Tunnels and did a lot a swimming and lounging on da beach.

Had lunch in Hanalei (Polynesia Cafe - don%26#39;t recommend). I was hoping for Tropical Taco but they are closed on Sunday. Headed to the house and packed. (WAAH!!)

Went back towards Kapa%26#39;a. Stopped at the fair and bought Red Dirt Shirts for the poor kiddos we left at home. Went to the Coconut Marketplace and got out as fast as we could (what a tourist trap).

Had dinner at Duke%26#39;s Barefoot Bar, watched a cruise ship pull out and thanked the tug. (My cousin was a tug operator.) Cried that we didn%26#39;t want to leave. Returned the rental car. Caught DH browsing a book called ';So you want to live in Hawaii?'; at the airport. Gave over the last of our fruit to the friendly Ag inspectors at the gate (ate a couple of apple bananas standing there at the inspection point, waaah!). Flew LIH-LAX-RDM, arriving at home around noon on Monday.

It%26#39;s now Thursday, and I%26#39;m still on island time. It took all of 15 minutes to relax and fall out of the groove when we got to Kauai. I hope it sticks with me for a few more days at least. :-)

If you are still reading this and want to take a look at our vacation photos check out my Flickr: flickr.com/photos/鈥?/a> ... just be forewarned that I am something of a plant nerd so there%26#39;s a lot of photos of pretty flowers. Also got a great pedicure just before heading to Kauai so you%26#39;ll see many of my toes, but otherwise not too many pics of me!

Thanks to everyone on this board for their help and suggestions. I hope we can return soon!

    Trip Report - 4/22-27

Nice report thank you and your pictures were very lovely and if you are a plant nerd the I am a dog nerd cause that little dog in the pictures was so cute that was the first thing I honed in on and I went AWWW how cute.

    Marie

    Trip Report - 4/22-27

%26lt;%26lt;the first thing I honed in on and I went AWWW how cute.

HAHAHA I am a doggie lover too - but the first thing I honed in on was the GREEN water at Kipu Falls - and people actually SWIM in that -- YUCK -- it%26#39;s just like I remembered it!

UNCMOM, the dog was great! The lady at the pizza place said her name is Olive. She is super sweet and belongs to the owner of the shopping center in Kilauea. There was another dog too, but Olive just sat there with us the whole time, hoping for a slice of pizza. (And yes, she got some sausage and some crust!)

The water at Kipu was nasty - the people leaving as we got there had been swimming and said it was fine. With all the wonderful clean beaches I wouldn%26#39;t swim at Kipu... does it really ALWAYS look like that?

    %26lt;%26lt; With all the wonderful clean beaches I wouldn%26#39;t swim at Kipu... does it really ALWAYS look like that?%26gt;%26gt;

Well it has been years since we went on the Kipu Safari (Kayak, hike etc) but I will tell you it was that way then and people were splashing away (NOT ME) All I could think of was Lepto! NO NO NO - I will stay OUT. I have no desire to go back, there have been to many happenings there regarding safety!

Fiveforefun, Your pictures are gorgeous, you have a good eye! Looks like you had a wonderful time. I have been looking at some rentals at Moloa%26#39;a, so I%26#39;m curious where you stayed? Were you happy with the location of Moloa%26#39;a? Thanks, Denise

Denise, glad you enjoyed the photos. :-) I really enjoyed taking them!

I liked Moloa%26#39;a and would stay there again. It isn%26#39;t close to... well, anything. But that was OK with us. We found it to be relatively central to what we wanted to see, and away from lots of people. There are probably more chickens than people in Moloa%26#39;a. I guess somewhere like Kapa%26#39;a or Lihue would be the ';most'; central but we didn%26#39;t want to stay in town.

We weren%26#39;t on the beach but it was just a short (1-2 minute) walk to the sand. That was fine by us, we really just wanted a place to sleep, shower, and stash our stuff. :-)

    Aloha from Kaua%26#39;i!

Wow, glad you had such a good time here - you were indeed lucky to be here when Polihale opened - it is an unforgettable place - so pristine and huge - and I was surprised to hear Queen%26#39;s Pond was formed this time of year - hooray - I%26#39;ll be out there next Sunday for sure in that case! Awesome place!

    ';Started out at Queens Bath. It was too rough to swim, with the waves washing over both the mouth of the pool AND the rocks on the ocean side.';

I%26#39;m not going to wag my finger at you - lol! But suffice it to say you were very lucky that you decided not to swim there!

Coconut Marketplace is trying very hard to survive in this economy - they have re-painted, re-roofed and have several new shops and restaurants soon opening up (plus we are hoping a new movie theatre)- they do have big plans for it, but the economy is so difficult right now to implement all of them. Our hula halau does the keiki hula show there on Wednesdays at 5:00 and also on Saturday - yesterday I was there to help make leis for the girls to sell and there were really a lot of visitors enjoying the live music and hula - I was happy to see the area coming alive a little. Don%26#39;t be too hard on it - it is a much needed area for Kaua%26#39;i and I do hope that it survives!

Da Booze Shop in Waimea has such ono food! I worked at a Outrigger race at Kalapaki a little while ago and they catered the food - it was absolutely fantastic - and they also had lots of selections for vegetarians, which kind of surprised me! A little known spot with great food - nice owners as well!

Mahalo for your trip report - you%26#39;ll have to come back soon!

    Malama Pono,

    Janet

Thanks for the report and sharing your pictures. Really like the pictures of Daphne the Cockatoo. She always makes us smile.

Thanks for the trip report......Always love to here what people do on their stay on Kauai..........The pics are great. I have to agree. Polihale is magnificent!!!

I third that--Polihale is paradise!! That beach makes you really feel like you are getting away from it all.

Trip Advisor posting number of contributions on reviews, yay

I like this! You can see the number of contributions a reviewer has made, and if you click on their name, you can see how many reviews, how many photos, etc they have posted and when they signed up for Trip Advisor. many times I read a review and have to research the poster to see if they are just a one-time poster ';top siding'; a negative review to bury it (read: hotel having employees or management staff post positive reviews to change rating or put the negative review several pages back).

it doesn%26#39;t necessarily mean someone who posts only once in their entire TA history is not posting a true review of somewhere they actually stayed, but it definitely makes me wonder if they are credible. and it makes me pause when they are glowing, ';market-speak'; reviews saying things like ';amazing amenities'; and ';close to shopping, attractions, etc'; or if it actually mirrors their website description of their hotel.

You can also view when the reviewer signed up for Trip Advisor. was it the same day just to post that one review? I feel a lot more comfortable if the person has also posted on forums, and asked questions prior to a trip.

I haven%26#39;t posted many negative reviews, but I have had to do a few when the stay actually warranted it. It is always interesting to me when right after posting a negative review, several posts show up the next day or within one day of each other, always one-posters, and always glowing reviews of the same hotel actually negating things that were said. now we can see the history of posters like this right by their review.

thanks, TA. I love this new feature!

Trip Advisor posting number of contributions on reviews, yay

it is a great feature, but not new. They started tying names to reviews and contributions through clickable profiles back in 2006, IIRC!

Trip Advisor posting number of contributions on reviews, yay

    *scratch head*

really? I%26#39;ve never seen it before. do you have to have something ';enabled'; on your %26#39;puter to have it show? I do many reviews and haven%26#39;t seen this on any of the reviews of the hotels, right on their review site, before yesterday.

anyway, whenever they added it, I love it. I know posters have asked for it for a long time.

    :) thumbs up TA!

You are right that now the contributions are now visible without clicking on the user name. I just meant that all the same information was visible if you clicked on the username, which would bring up the profile.

To me it doesn%26#39;t make any real difference to make that click if I want to see what the reviewer has contributed, but for readers who are new to TA, I guess it%26#39;s more transparent now.

I remember back in 2006, when they started linking contributions ... before that a review was just by ';a trip advisor member.'; That was a huge change.

  • Learn to Surf on the Big Island?

Sorry if this is a repeat question...but

can you learn to surf on the big island in mid-may to early june? or is it much better to go to kauai or maui for that?

We are trying to decide between the big island and kauai and the volcano is huge pull for me, but I know we would really like to learn to surf too!

    thanks!!

Yes you can learn to surf here in June

Need help--not sure where to stay in Maui

Booked the Kahana Beach Resort on Expedia--some of the reviews not so good. Looking for an affordable place to stay, beach front, with kitchen. Any advice would be very helpful. Traveling end of June for our 27th wedding anniversary. This is our first time to Hawaii and I%26#39;d like it to be special.

We are low maintenance and like peace and quiet but still want to be able to go out for a nice dinner or two.

Need help--not sure where to stay in Maui

    Aloha Rebaphoenix,

I think the Kahana area is a very peaceful and good area to stay in and has some very affordable a nice resorts. I think you would like being close to Kahana Gateway with several nice restaurants within walking distance...Roy%26#39;s for fine dining, Maui Brewery for good food and good beer, a steak house and even a McDonald%26#39;s. Also in Kahana is a great Chinese restaurant, The China Boat and a little mall with Dolly%26#39;s Pub for pretty good food and a relaxed atmosphere. There is also a mini mart in the Gateway, so overall it is a pretty convenient place to stay. As far as Kahana Beach, I think there are nicer resorts in the same area that you might enjoy more. I will name just a few that I think are in the same price range and you may want to take a look at them on wizardpub web site for an aerial view and pretty accurate review. Many of these have very nice ocean/beach front condos probably for about what you are paying, Valley Isle, Royal Kahana, Kahana Reef and Kahana Village, there are others but I am trying to stay within a similar price range. Some are larger high rises and some are smaller 4 story like Kahana Reef. Kahana Reef condos are all ocean front and you would have to request ocean view on the others and if you desire an upgraded unit, request that also. There are some great deals on VRBO now in the Kahana area. You chose a nice area to stay in!

Oh, oh pushed the button twice....sorry!

    The Kahana area is lovely.

The reviews are often mixed - even the absolute best of the best places get %26#39;dinged%26#39; - so for that I advise reading the reviews to determine what was the problem.

    Have a wonderful anniversary, Congratulations!

Thank you for your suggestions. When you refer to the royal Kahana is that the same as the Outrigger Royal Kahana? I did find that resort on the internet and it looked beautiful.

I really do appreciate all of your help! Thank you!

    Aloha Reba,

Yes, that is the Outrigger Royal Kahana I was referring to and as you can see the building is a U shape, so the condos in the front have the most spectacular views. It is a very nice resort.

Do you have knowledge of any other smaller hotels/condos that might be a better fit? We plan to spend most of the time on the beach and want the property to be located on the beach. I really liked the Mauian but it%26#39;s not available.

Reba - Napili is quite a special place, Napili Surf has been offering some excellent specials I would try anywhere in Napili if you are drawn to the area, we enjoyed the Mauian, but they are popular! I think most places are running some great specials.

I hate to see you lose wht you have already paid to Expedia for your current reservations, but I do understand sometimes that is what we have to do. Have you spoken to Expedia about the possibility of switching?

Did you look at the properties via wizardpub.com? I don%26#39;t mean to be redundant, if you have.

The Kahana are is very nice - there is a new trip report posted yesterday, they stayed in kahana (might be of interest to you).

We%26#39;re staying at the Aston Mahana (rented through VRBO) and really enjoying it. They have studio, one and two bedroom units and all have direct ocean front views (about 200 ft. from the ocean) ... amazing views! All units have kitchens and most have washers/dryers in them. We like everything about this complex and will definitely come back.

The boardwalk from Kaanapali Beach (Whaler%26#39;s Village/Black Rock area) ends here ... it%26#39;s a great morning or sunset walk (you can go for a few miles on it if you want).

The only negative is that you need to walk a couple of hundred feet to get to a good swimming area, but it hasn%26#39;t been a problem for us as we%26#39;ve been enjoying driving to explore Maui%26#39;s many great beaches.

We%26#39;ve agreed that the Aston Mahana is a %26#39;return to%26#39; place for us.

    Hyatt car rental

What car company is located at the Hyatt? Should we reserve in advance before we arrive on 5/17 or will there be economy cars available on a daily basis as we feel we want to drive around?

    Hyatt car rental

AFAIK Budget is located at the Hyatt. Im sure they could furnish you with a vehicle without a booking.

    Hyatt car rental

Yes reserve ahead of time go through this company much cheaper than going directly thru budget and budget will email you a confirmation directly, pick up is at the Hyatt.

    www.hawaiidrive-o.com/

I have a economy car reserved for 2 seperate days at 32.00 each day incl taxes.

    Aloha Marie

Hertz is also at Hyatt in addition to Budget.

It is better to book in advance to get a cheaper rate and to get the car that you desire because sometimes availability is limited.

Wow, I went to the hawaiidrive-0.com website...could not get a rental for a day for an economy car for less than $68/day....what is up with that? Anyplace cheaper close to the Hyatt or at the Hyatt?

Try expedia.com. Just for fun, I plugged in pick up on May 17 and return on May 18, the daily rates for an economy car are (US$ of course):

Enterprise, 1888 Kalakaua Ave, Suite C107, Honolulu, Hawaii

    $34.99/day

Budget, 2424 KALAKAUA AVE, HONOLULU, HAWAII (Hyatt)

    $47.99/day

There are cheaper rates but they are outside the Kalakaua strip. Ask them if they provide pick-up/drop service.

When I was there, I rented directly from budget.com and got a good rate because it%26#39;s a corporate rate.

    Good luck.

Thanks, actually I was able to get a better rate of $28.00/day with Budget at the Hyatt....I must have done something wrong before....

    Thanks for everyone%26#39;s help!

Logistics: The Budget rental office is on the second floor by the escalator. The cars themselves (understandably) are in the basement. So go upstairs first.

There is no gasoline on site, so the policies about bringing the car back empty/full may be different from what you are used to.

    Absolutely reserve the car NOW.

Budget is a better company to rent from than Hertz at the Hyatt site. Trust me.

BLBL - Will be renting a car at the Hyatt later this year.

Why is Budget better than Hertz at the Hyatt?

What way is the fuel policy different?

The Hertz office at the Hyatt is poorly staffed. They just don%26#39;t have their act together and are incredibly indifferent to the fact that they screw up so bad. As a general rule, we always use Hertz - we are Gold Club members ... but we avoid the Hyatt location. This isn%26#39;t a single occurrence. Last time around we used Budget and they were great. Well-staffed, knowledgeable, courteous.

There are no gas pumps/tanks at the rental sites at the hotel. Probably safety or water quality reasons. Therefore, cars aren%26#39;t always tanked up - and you might need a fill-up before you head for your destination. They adjust their policies accordingly. These are small operations, so they don%26#39;t have the huge stock of cars that the airports do. For that reason, you really need to reserve your car in advance. And - they may have shorter hours than you are used to - so be sure to ask.

    Thanks BLBL for the advice.

As for fuel policy, I assume you bring the car back with the same volume of fuel as picked up with? Half a tank on pickup, return with a half tank. No credit given for any extra you leave in the tank above half full.

    Shave Ice Options???

Okay, I have to admit I%26#39;m a huge fan of Local Boyz Shave Ice in the Kalama Village (Kihei.) Great Stuff! If you haven%26#39;t tried it, you should. Grab one and park yourself on the bench by the pond - total relaxation.

I%26#39;m curious though. What are other island location that serve up great shave ice? Anybody have recomendations? My next trip is still unplanned -still in dream phase - but I%26#39;ll give them a try next time around.

    Rich

    Shave Ice Options???

New Local Boy Snack Shop (no Z) opened last week in Lahaina on Front Street near Burger King. Same shave ice and some other interesting snack options as well.

    Shave Ice Options???

Just be sure it is SHAVED shave ice, not blender chopped. Last time I went to the truck south of the Prince in Makena, it was a blender chopped non-treat and I threw it away.

kaiwahine - thanks for the tip....do you know how long I%26#39;ve been saying Local Boy ';z';? Now that I know, I%26#39;ll likely still get it wrong.

I always wondered why they didn%26#39;t do Lahaina, too. I%26#39;ll try the new spot next time....

And yes, it has to be shave....not blended.

    Rich

We liked Annie%26#39;s Shave Ice in Lahaina near the Banyan Tree Park. It was on a street that intersected with Front Street - Prison, maybe? My kids enjoyed eating it in the park.

We also tried Tom%26#39;s Mini Mart in Wailuku, which was my bribe for getting them out of the water and into the car when we had to pick up Daddy at the airport.

Don%26#39;t be tempted by the stuff at Lappert%26#39;s - great ice cream but the ';shave'; ice was not the real deal.

    Julie

Go local %26amp; stop by Tom%26#39;s Mini Mart in Wailuku. owner makes all of the syrups %26amp; shaves the ice block while you watch! No junk....jus%26#39; the real deal.

ScubaTim - Tom%26#39;s Mini Mart sounds great! Wishing I had one now. It%26#39;s a must on the next visit. Thanks for the tip.

    Best Shuttle Choice!

i know many members are tired of reading threads on shuttles!

    YET!!

    my question is different..

out of all the ones in Waikiki.

which do you suggest is the best??

    thanks

    Best Shuttle Choice!

This question comes up almost daily here.

I%26#39;ve been using Roberts Shuttle for thirty years.

They are the largest, least expensive, and most reliable on the Islands.

$15.00 round trip vs $70 plus for a cab. If you have a group of four, a cab would be a better deal.

As I travel as one or two, the Roberts deal is better. But,timing can be everything; if a full Roberts has just departed, you can count on a ten to 15 minute wait.

Just for my own information, I booked the VIP Shuttle for this afternoon. They meet you in the baggage area, with your name on a sign. They cover

Waikiki, and they are $20 round trip.

I%26#39;ll get back tomorrow with a report on VIP.

    Best Shuttle Choice!

';$15.00 round trip vs $70 plus for a cab. If you have a group of four, a cab would be a better deal';.

    We always take a taxi-it costs around $30-not $70.

well yes i know many come up every week... but the ones i read were should i take a cab vs a taxi..

which i already know the answer too...

i just wanted to know peoples personal experience out of all the ones in Hawaii.. which do you suggest is the best

Where can you get a r/t taxi for $30? One way, maybe.

We used Star Taxi a couple of weeks ago. They ask you to call them as soon as you get your bags and then they are there to get you curbside within 5 minutes (taxis can%26#39;t sit out at the curb).

Our taxi from Sheraton Princess Kaiulani to the airport was almost $40, so $70 round trip is pretty accurate, and our thought was exactly along the lines of 4 people in our party, $15 a piece, then a taxi is less expensive.

Even in a party of 2 I would have preferred a taxi, I think I would only consider a shuttle if I were by myself.

If you like sitting on a bus for 2 hours and stopping at 20 hotels after a really long flight, then Roberts Shuttle is the way to go. You line up and wait for the bus to load 50 passengers then you have to stop at several hotels along the way.

We%26#39;ve always used Roberts Hawaii and it%26#39;s NEVER taken more than 45-50 mins to reach out hotel!;[[]

I%26#39;ve used Roberts twice. I bought a round trip ticket each time. On my first trip everything went along without a hitch. On my second trip on the return leg to the airport it was a different story. Roberts advised booking the bus 2 hours prior to the time that I needed to be at the airport so I booked it for 6am.

The bus didn鈥檛 turn up at 6am as Roberts said it would. After a few phone calls and excuses from Roberts, the bus eventually turned up at 7am. The driver then advised me that he would not be able to get me to the airport for at least two hours. I advised the driver that I would call Roberts and he said he%26#39;d give me 5 minutes before he%26#39;d drive off without me. The lady on the phone from Roberts told me I was to blame. She was quite rude about it. The driver left and I was stuck paying for a cab to the airport.

Cab cost me around $40 including tip one way.

So my advice, take the $9 one way shuttle from the airport to Waikiki, but save yourself the hassle of shuttle unreliability and take a cab on your return leg.

    Baz

I forgot to mention, for a really good shuttle to Waikele Outlets, use Tahiti shuttle service. I found a coupon in one of the tourist books. I think it was a $12 or $13 round trip. I used it twice and was really happy with the service.

I figured there was no point in renting a vehicle if it was going to sit in the car park all day.

    Baz

I personally would NEVER use Roberts Shuttle.

    it%26#39;s the worse shuttle ever.

I flown in with Hawaiian Airline and get in to Honolulu around 11 am.

I get to my hotel (Ohana East) at 12:15-12:30.

I would use Star Taxi, Rabi Taxi, or Reliable Taxi.

On my next trip, I would use Tahiti Taxi as someone suggest it.
