Looking for a certain type of candy

Traveling to Oahu May 9th and staying for 7 nights. About 10 or 15 years ago my grandparents brought us back a bunch of candy she got. Unfortunately I%26#39;m not sure which island she stayed on if that matters.

The candy had a wrapper that sort of dissolved in your mouth. Besides it being very delicious that%26#39;s about all I can remember about it.

Does anyone know what it is or where we can get it?

Probably Botan rice candy. The outer layer was made from rice which allowed you to eat the ';paper';. Check your local asian/Chinese grocery store for it -no need to wait to come to Hawaii to buy it.

That%26#39;s what it sounds like to me. We used to get it at imports stores when I was a kid. The candy was a little jell-like.

You can find it on the Mainland.

If you liked the rice candy (oftentimes found in small boxes, sometimes in bags), and want to try out other local sweets, the best place to find a large selection and excellent prices is at a Long%26#39;s Drug Store; particularly the one Downtown on Hotel Street.

All Long%26#39;s always have a special on one brand or another going on. Plus, nearby (on Bishop St just seaward of Hotel St) that carries nothing but local snacks and candies ';Wholesale Unlimited';. They have an awesome selection, but the consensus is they are over-priced, and most go to the Long%26#39;s unless for a particular rare item.

My favoites on sale this week are li hing mui Fuji apples (somewhat new and incredible), arare nori, and spicy cuttlefish.

.... the japanese candy is called ';Tomoe Ame';.

Upon your arrival and if you in the Ala Moana/Kapiolani area, go visit the Don Quijote Store. Beside picking up your chocolate macadamia nuts and cookies, go visit the japanese candy section and ask for ';Tomoe Ame';, the name of this japanese candy.

Also fun is Don Quijote, a Japanese chain which is like a grocery store / target combo from 30 years ago. (so don%26#39;t expect a modern target, maybe more like a Woolworth with grocery store and lots of local stuff)

Yes, the candy is called Tomoe Ame. You can get it at Long%26#39;s Drugs Stores throughout Hawaii. They have it at the Ala Moana Center Long%26#39;s Drugs Store.
