An average surfer's dream honeymoon on Kauai

My fiance and I are planning to honeymoon on Kauai at the end of this June to early July. What we%26#39;re looking for seems to be evading us. If anyone can help us out, we%26#39;d really appreciate some advice. First off, we don%26#39;t want to stay any place with a room number, nor do we want to stay in a condo. We prefer to stay in a private home. We don%26#39;t need a large house, we just want something comfortable for the two of us to spend our first week together married. We want beachfront, not oceanfront. A house where we can sit on the back patio and watch the surfer%26#39;s come in, and at the same time be able to carry our surfboards right out the back door and start paddling out to a great session. Our budget is up to 2300-2500. I might be able to convince her to spend a little more for the only reason that is OUR honeymoon, not just another trip. We will be getting a rental car for the week. We do want to see a lot of the island, but we also want to be able to cook most of our own dinners and lunches. Are we asking for too much or is there a great place that someone hasn%26#39;t told us about yet? PLEASE HELP US!!!!

Is this one of my best bets? It looks great so far, but I can%26#39;t find any reviews on this house.

Your right, your requirements really limit your choices on Kauai, but it does look like you have found pretty close to it.

I know the house, we have stayed across from it a number of times at Kuhio Shores condos. It looks like the owners have done quite a few renovations in the last few years, but I have not seen the inside.

I%26#39;m not a surfer, but I imagine you could put your boards in the water there at PK%26#39;s beach and then paddle past Kuhio Shores down to the area off Lawai Beach, where you quite often see surfers. If you walked down there, it might be the equivalent of a block and one half.

Thanks for the reply! Do you know of any better spots? Or any other locations on Kauai that would meet our picky requirements? Poipu isn%26#39;t our only choice to stay on the island. We would be open to other locations.

Staying South is probably your best bet for favorable waves. This one is way out of the price range, but it sits right on Pakalas Beach (Infinities)...I%26#39;m not a surfer either, just love to watch, but anyone on island will tell you Infinities has the best consistant conditions and a real long break.

With the ecomomy the way it is, it wouldn%26#39;t hurt to contact them - maybe they%26#39;ll make you a deal:

I%26#39;ve seen the house from the outside - NICE!

Thanks 3chihuahuas for the post, that almost looks a little too indulgent for us! Wow! What a property! But I want to say that my wife-to-be would rather not stay on the west side. Looks like she wants to be on the south side somewhere, or even the east side. Don%26#39;t think that we%26#39;re not open to other spots on the island, it%26#39;s just that what we%26#39;ve read about the island so far, we%26#39;d rather stay on the south side. Far enough away from tons of people, but close enough to go out at night with a short, short drive.

Are you bringing your own boards? Not sure how that works out with a rental car but here%26#39;s some good info on surf spots:

How%26#39;s the surf been in Phoenix, LOL...

you can probably get a rack, or foam and locking straps for your boards, if you need to fit them on top of the car roof.

Maybe the rental car agency can help you, or any place that rents boards.

South shore will be best in june/july for surf, and off lawai, and poipu are very popular.

Also, you might check out shipwreck at eh Hyatt, mostly all locals there, and, if the endless summer types are still camped out on the far end, under the trees, stop by and talk story with them.

If you do not wish to bring your own boards you can rent at Nukumoi across from Poipu Beach Park.

My old pal and bunkie, when I lived in Huntington Beach, used to fly two of his boards over to Oahu, and surf the different spots there.

He learned to fit two boards into one protective board cover to save on airline added costs. Then eventually just took one board with him, instead of the two.

Sounds like the perfect honeymoon for you two is just on the horizon...it is coming pretty quickly, so be careful about waiting too long, since your lodging requirements narrow the field a bit.

The best breaks in the summer will probably be on the west side, even more so on the base. While it isn%26#39;t exactly what you are looking for, you could look for a house on the west side, in Kekaha or Waimea (many are right on Kekaha Beach). There are some surfing spots there. You would then be able to drive to Pakala%26#39;s (which would be 10 mins to the west) and after procuring a pass to the base, go to the beach there. You would need to get a pass there. The west side is my favorite spot on the island and would allow you to get away from it all.

You could go serving at PK%26#39;s, and stay at the house in Poipu that you mentioned. You would have to walk about 7-10 mins from Baby%26#39;s Beach, where the house is, to PK%26#39;s, which is the spot to surf. Or you would drive 7 mins or so to Waiohai, which is another surfing spot. Neither of these spots are as popular as the west side surfing spots, but are still good.
