Kayak From Anini Lagoon to Hanalei Bay?

Do people do this? It would be in mid-July. Looks like a 4-mile one way trip and would only try on a calm morning. I would like to take advantage of kayaks available with our rental.

Any comments or advise welcome.

Kayak From Anini Lagoon to Hanalei Bay?

For that route you%26#39;d be outside of the enclosed reef much of the time. A calm day inside the reef at Anini won%26#39;t tell you everything. I haven%26#39;t seen that as a regular kayak route. You might be the only ones out there.

A popular kayak route is to go down Hanalei River and out into Hanalei Bay over to Hideaways Beach. Even then , those are in escorted groups usually.

I may be wrong but my guess is this is not a wise thing to do.

Kayak From Anini Lagoon to Hanalei Bay?

Yes, you%26#39;ll want to stay well outside the reef the entire route from Anini to the Halalei River. The only spot inviting enough to come inside between them is Hideaways as Napaguy also mentioned.

I%26#39;d go against the current from Anini to Kalihiwai Bay for my first time outside the reef from Anini. You can also pass Kalihiwai and paddle along Secret Beach before turning around. Do turn around before going through the channel between the rock and the Kilauaea Lighthouse - gnarly even on a calm day.

Anini to Hanalei is about the same, but you%26#39;ll be going with the current on the way down.

I%26#39;d want to be able to swim a mile or two in the open ocean before I%26#39;d try it. Make sure you can get in and out of the boat easily in current and deep water. Don%26#39;t try and come in early if you get nervous and don%26#39;t want to paddle back to Anini outside the reef. There%26#39;s no real clean channels at Sealodge Beach, the horseshoe cave or Queens Bath. You can come in at the Hideaways channel, but it can be hard to find. Just stay outside the reef and let the current take you around the Puu Poa point and paddle for the Hanalei Pier.

I see a lot of paddling teams in outriggers taking the route from Hanalei to what seems like the lighthouse and back for training on calm days.

Your Milage May Vary - you may want to do a risk vs rewards tradeoff?

Not sure what your kayaking background is, but the ocean kayaking, on your own might be a bit challenging, and if any problems happen, well, thank you for visiting kauai, anyway.

I know you have some free kayaks, and it might be an idea to kayak our rivers.

Beyond and back, as well as Dave have given you some good scoops.

Our tradewinds in july, in our 15 years of experience here, can be up in the mid twenties, kicking up some unfreindly wind waves.

This is way more dangerous than going to Kipu falls or Queen%26#39;s bath. If you have ocean kayaking experience that%26#39;s one thing but I have a feeling you wouldn%26#39;t be asking if you did. The wind can produce some bad conditions so heading out on a calm morning doesn%26#39;t guarantee anything. Perhaps consider sticking to the rivers.

Thanks for the feedback, all good input.

I%26#39;ve done alot of kayaking and surfing back in the day, but not much in the past 10 years so pretty out of shape. That said, I know of several friends my age and condition who did the 17 mile Na Pali guided trip two years ago. Are the open ocean conditions not similar?

Anyway, will probably stick to the lagoon and Kalihiwai Bay. Will have to see when we get there if we can haul kayaks on the rental minivan to any of the river spots.

Thanks again!

Then I%26#39;d really recommend you do try the guided kayak tours of Napali coastline. To answer your question the ocean conditions can be similar. The big difference is you%26#39;re with a group , in case anything goes wrong.
