Kona Camping Ranch

I found this through alternative hawaii website, its a private campground south of Kona in Captain Cook. Ive searched these forums about camping and Im convinced enough not to attempt it, but this private one Kona Camping Ranch looks good. I cant find any feedback on it however. It looks like it just opened. Does anyone have any feedback?

Kona Camping Ranch

is there a website or other location info? One thing to bear in mind is that the TOWN of Capt. Cook is over 1000 feet above sea level, so even if it is ';minutes to'; somewhere, that is on a steep road that is winding and can be very dark at night. You can get into the ocean off a rock ledge at Two Step but real (ie sand) beches start at Kahaluu on Alii Drive and go up to Kohala, so ocean swimming and beaching will be a half hour to 90 minutes away.

Kona Camping Ranch

must be new.....never heard of it....

Capt Cook as about 1500 ft elevation, cool humid, and wet in the evening....its a 30 min drive one way for anything,Stores, Food, beaches, snorkeling

During rush hour, 6 to 9 and 3 to 7 it may take up to 1.5 hours each way

I have never heard of it either, but please be warned that some people refer to the way South areas like Hookena, Papa Bay, Hoopuloa and Honomalino as ';Captain Cook.';

ok heres the address:

87-3556 Mamalahoa Hwy.

Captain Cook

HI, 96704

Oh, my. I used Google Map. That address is well south of Hookena Beach Park. It is very far from most of the places that people seem to ask about on here. It might be OK if you want to hang around the campsite otherwise it is a LOT of driving and slow driving in traffic or at night. It might meet your goals (not sure what you want to do/see).

Hookena Beach Park.

I have been there once in winter when there was too much surge to snorkel. In more recent times there have been some very sad, violent events there:

westhawaiitoday.com/articles/…local04.txt (reporting sentencing for a 2007 assault on campers at the beach)

westhawaiitoday.com/articles/…local03.txt (reporting an assault on a 65 year old man by someone who%26#39;d asked him for a beer)

I would go farther north to swim or snorkel.

Gee, how did I guess! Fook Yew is at work again. :):):)

looks like about 1 hour south of Kona about 30 min south of Capt cook village, and 1.5 hour from stores

The sites look pretty exposed..... $20 a night

But it would be better than at any state facility.. That I will agree with.

Dan is right, it sure will beat all the public camping facilities and it actually seems like a nice camp ground. However, it%26#39;s further away than Captain Cook, it%26#39;s just before the Kona Paradise subdivision, about an hour drive from Kailua-Kona. It will be longer if you take the mentioned public bus and if you do you will be stranded in the middle of the nowhere.

Dear Long Beach: Yep I%26#39;m thinking that location will not be convenient to anything. If you have car and enough time you are gonna want to loop your way around the island.

Best bet is to look at all of your camping or low budget options such as maybe the Hostel in Kona, cabins at Kolopa State Park, other private camping locations. Def. see if you can pull up reviews to get a good feel of the places. My friend just talked about camping at Volcano National Park and like it but late arrival meant he got the last spot, so check in early. He did a very adventurous bike loop around the whole island and mixed camping w/ B%26amp;B%26#39;s and hotels as well.

Keep in mind camping in Hawaii can be nice but can also be very rainy, windy, hot depending on exact location and as Dan says State Beach camping very very iffy.

Big thing is to plan ahead, just don%26#39;t show up with a tent :) Aloha, TheodoreJay

Thanks guys, ill just have to save more coins.
